Best Foot Forward

Hunting Season Opens on Trophy Shoes

It’s a path to paradise for the shoe obsessed — actually for anyone who sees that fashion starts from the ground up. Walk into the vastly expanded and opulently re-imagined footwear department at Saks Fifth Avenue at the Gardens on El Paseo in Palm Desert and prepare to have the heart beat faster. Sink down on a banquette and enjoy.

From the bubble serpentine chandeliers and spherical “chiffon” lighting fixtures by Charles Loomis overhead down to the rugs woven in Tibet, the ambiance transcends everyday reality. The fabled eighth floor of the New York Saks, so big it has its own zip code, 10022-SHOE, inspired the décor. But the wall art, some curated from desert galleries, has its own western flair.

Astride saarinem tables, trophy shoes by a galaxy of designers lure the eye. A fantasy glitter suede Chanel pump, a beruffled Guiseppe Zanotti sandal, a Prada leopard-spotted bootie. Luxe labels also include YSL, Brian Atwood, Miu Miu, Manolo Blanik, the rising star Alexandre Birman, and others.

“Shoes are in my blood,” department manager Paula Maietta says. She has devoted a 35-year career to her favorite accessory. Currently, she sees the wedge as the top silhouette “in boots, pumps, sandals, and oxford-style shoes.” Platforms, like the wedge, prevail into spring 2012. That’s when she forecasts “lots and lots of color. It all works for the desert.”

The grand opening for the new footwear scene at Saks takes place Nov. 10 from 2 to 8 p.m., with a ribbon cutting, visiting dignitaries, and “shoeology” session with Jimmy Choo’s Christine Marconi. Look for live entertainment, food and beverages, and a “man cave” refuge for gentlemen from 5 to 8 p.m. And local pastry chefs compete in a shoe-shaped dessert contents.

As objects of desire, shoes can adorn the mantle as sculpture, as well as glorify the feet. You don’t have to lose weight to slip into them. They can take your plainest outfit to great heights. Step into a pair of kick-derriere shoes and you’re ready to conquer.

10 FUN FACTS ABOUT COCO CHANEL..............

  • She was born in France in 1883 and was part of a big family, as one of five children.
  • When Coco was 12, her mother passed away from tuberculosis and her father left the family; she spent the next six years in an orphanage.
  • She became a licensed hat-maker and owned her first shop in 1910.
  • She introduced her first perfume, Chanel No. 5, in 1922, and it was one of the first perfumes ever to mix natural and artificial essences.
  • She invented the “Little Black Dress” in 1926, which French Vogue dubbed “Chanel’s Ford”, for its practicality and marketability.
  • She is credited with popularizing the concept of “costume jewelry” in the 1920s, creating seasonal jewelry that mixed fake pearls with real stones.
  • She introduced the idea of using jersey fabric to create clothing, which had prior been used only for men’s undergarments.
  • She and her brand are most well known for costume jewelry, two-toned shoes, quilted bags, and simple suits made of tweed or jersey.
  • Her classic Chanel suit became famous for its flattering cut, simple fabric, and specially weighted lining, to give it that perfect hang.

SHOE FACTOIDS

Footwear Facts

  • Red Sandals
Sandals originated in warm climates where the soles of the feet needed protection but the top of the foot needed to be cool.
  • 4,000 years ago the first shoes were made of a single piece of rawhide that enveloped the foot for both warmth and protection.
  • In Europe pointed toes on shoes were fashionable from the eleventh to the fifteenth centuries.
  • In the Middle East heels were added to shoes to lift the foot from the burning sand.
  • In Europe in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries heels on shoes were always colored red.
  • Shoes all over the world were identical until the nineteenth century, when left- and right-footed shoes were first made in Philadelphia.
  • In Europe it wasn't until the eighteenth century that women's shoes were different from men's.
  • Six-inch-high heels were worn by the upper classes in seventeenth-century Europe. Two servants, one on either side, were needed to hold up the person wearing the high heels.

  • Sneakers were first made in America in 1916. They were originally called keds.
  • Boots were first worn in cold, mountainous regions and hot, sandy deserts where horse-riding communities lived. Heels on boots kept feet secure in the stirrups.
  • The first lady's boot was designed for Queen Victoria in 1840.

INTERESTING SHOE FACTS AND TIDBITS

Shoe Fitting Pointers

1. When trying on shoes, make sure you're wearing the appropriate sock. For instance, if you're trying on boots that you'd wear with heavy socks, don't try them on with thin nylons.

2. The best time to try on shoes is usually at the end of the day, when your feet are most swollen. However, don't abuse this rule of thumb: if you've just completed a sightseeing tour which required 10 miles of walking, and that's not your typical exercise routine, then by all means don't try on office heels that night! The point of waiting until the end of the day is to make sure that the footwear can fit you at your widest-- kind of a "worst case scenario" check.

3. The first shoe you try on should be for your larger foot. For most people, their larger foot is the opposite from the hand they write with. For example, if you're right handed, your left foot might be bigger. Always fit the pair of shoes to this foot. Even though there are about 20 separate parts to an average shoe, the fact remains that they are mass-produced. It's up to you to customize the fit-- a small heel pad, for instance, works wonders.

4. Stand up with your shoes on. Walk around a bit. You should be able to wiggle your toes in the front of the shoe. For most footwear, your toes will be able to touch the top of the shoe, but there should be 3/8" to 1/2" of space between your longest toe and the end of the shoe.

5. Don't buy shoes that are too tight. If you're at the point where you're praying they will stretch to be comfortable, they probably won't. It's true that soft leather and suede give slightly, molding to your foot, but they will not dramatically increase in width or length. There's a difference between a "snug", comfortable fit and a "tight", uncomfortable fit. A few laps around a carpet should help you decide how you feel.
